Heaven’s Silhouette

Iyarri Chronicles Book 1

separator

When I was little, other children called me a monster. A painting proved them right.

A lifetime of cruel taunts and heartbreak has taught Aurelia to hide, to not get too close to anyone. A painter and gallery docent, her only solace is in the art that can’t stare back. When a new piece arrives, depicting an angelic figure who shares the physical features she’s always thought of as monstrous, Aurelia searches for the artist, determined to get the answers her mother has long-refused to provide.

But Aurelia isn’t the only one searching; there are others who want the artist—and the truth—silenced. She’s attacked by figures from the painting, fierce warriors with wings and sharpened blades. Shaken and bloody, Aurelia manages to escape with her life but finds herself hunted by the Iyarri, who are anything but angels. As she comes to terms with her connection to them, Aurelia is drawn deeper into the heart of a millennia-old struggle. If she’s not careful, the consequences will tear her body, her heart, and the Iyarri in two.

If I had to pick one word for Heaven's Silhouette it would be ``refreshing,`` because for all its gritty urban fantasy awesomeness, it refuses to rely on easy tropes, specifically the pseudo-feminist heroine who is an all powerful badass and magically possesses omnipresent agency. Aurelia is not a superhero; she's strong the way real women who find themselves in bad circumstances are strong. She finds small, personal ways to assert and preserve herself as forces bigger than her dictate the very terms of her existence. If that is not a fable of strength for 2020 I don't know what is. This is what speculative fiction does best. The characters are grayscale, the text engages difficult issues rather than toeing a palatable line around them, all while the fantasy cuts open worn out paradigms like a sharp knife. Just brilliant.

This book has brought me much joy during the pandemic. To begin with, it's actually truly original rather than a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings derivative like so many new fantasy novels. The world that the author has created is rich and very three-dimensional (Really! There is a whole flying society that is so creatively explored), and experienced through an artist protagonist with an eye for vivid detail and a deep love of beauty. It was also fun and exciting to get a brand new hardcover that was a numbered edition, autographed, and had that special new book smell. I have already pre-ordered the sequel and can't wait for it to get here!

With lyrical prose and atmospheric world building, Heaven’s Silhouette tells the story of a young woman’s search for her heritage - and in the process she finds herself.

Heaven’s Silhouette is a joy to hold. It’s as beautifully constructed as the words inside. I found myself not wanting to put it down. It’s hard to believe this is the author’s first novel. The story was engrossing and flowed smoothly. The characters are well developed and interesting. The world she creates is well thought out and excellently explained. The scents created to pair with the novel are just divine. Heaven’s Silhouette is an absolute gem. I’m very much looking forward to Mourning’s Dawn.

Aurelia is pulled into a new world that is as terrifying as it is beautiful. Every time Aurelia regains her footing, there's a new twist that leaves her--and the reader--reeling, and I loved every second of it... told through the keen eyes of an artist in striking prose with vivid detail

Absolutely delightful! I was absorbed from the first page. Desperate for the next one.

I an so in love with this book and the story it tells! Melissa has such beautiful descriptions of the small things and the love and observations of nature and art can be felt on every page.

Oh my gosh!! I stayed up until 4 in the morning twice this week to read. I cannot wait for the second book. Loved the characterization and the magical essence in these pages🖤🖤🖤
